If you are dealing with lots of heartburn then you are probably feeling bloated, suffering from abdominal discomfort and pain and even afraid to eat to avoid suffering all together!

But when you are free from heartburn then you can enjoy eating again and not have to worry about feeling stressed when going out to eat with family and friends.

Many of my patients see me for severe heartburn and I tell them to follow these 7 easy steps to dramatically reduce or even eliminate their heartburn.

Here’s 7 easy tips to get you started on the road to recovery:

1.     DON’T DRINK COLD BEVERAGES ESPECIALLY WITH ICE:  Cold beverages will constrict your esophageal sphincter and cause food to go back up. Drink beverages at room temperature.

2.     REMOVE CARBONATED DRINKS:  Carbonation is a common trigger for indigestion.

3.     AVOID TIGHT CLOTHES:  Snug-fitting clothes will push your stomach up and force food into your throat. Wear loose fitting clothes around the abdominal area and loosen your bra.

4.     AVOID ALCOHOL AND COFFEE:  Unfortunately, these beverages will aggravate heartburn symptoms.

5.     MINIMIZE STRESS:  Go for walks or even exercise. High stress can cause reflux.

6.     AVOID SPICY FOODS:  Spicy food can also cause heartburn. Eating more alkaline foods such fruits and veggies can dramatically reduce heartburn.

7.     ELIMINATE SUGAR:  In my practice sugar in all forms is the most common culprit.
